Yes, X’s friend is a playable character, complete with his own arsenal and story line! This is one of the coolest things in this game, but not the only thing As for the gameplay itself: if you’ve played the previous X games, then you’ll know what’s going on here: X still has his X-Buster, so he shoots stuff. Playing as X is simply the same as the other games, but Zero is a totally different experience. Zero has lost his X-Buster in this game, so now he fights exclusively with his Beam Sabre. Also, since Zero no longer has the range X has, his game is a little more difficult, since he has to get close to enemies to kill them.

However, if you’re tired of the same old gameplay with X, give Zero a whirl. Continuing with gameplay, the game in itself is not too tough or too easy, instead balanced just right. The Maverick bosses aren’t too hard to beat provided you have the right weapons , but the later bosses do get pretty hard especially Double and Sigma; play the game and see.

The game is structured pretty much in the same way as the others: selectable stages, the effectiveness of the weapons on certain bosses, and X’s ability to upgrade his armor with enhancement provided by the trusty Dr.

Light’s Weapon Capsules. Zero doesn’t gain new weapons like X does; instead he learns new sword techniques and other special moves including the super useful Double Jump. Controls are easy to use and remember: you have a fire button, a jump button, and a dash button, as well as weapon select buttons and two technique buttons.

Note: I recommend a six-button pad like the Sidewinder for this game; I use one and have the controls set exactly like the Saturn version, giving me perfect control. X4 retains the series’ 2D platform engine. You run-n-gun through several levels, collecting power-ups and new weapons, while squaring off against tough end bosses. However, X4 adds a second playable character, Zero, and his own story line.

Playing as Mega Man is as fun as ever, but Zero steals the show with his own unique attacks and techniques. Instead of an X Buster, Zero uses electro-sabers that force him to get up close and personal to his enemies, ultimately making playing as him more challenging.

Mega Man fans will be right at home with X4. For solid 2D platform gameplay, it’s a definite must-have for any action gamer’s library. X4 features beautiful 2D sprite graphics. The colorful, gigantic explosions and little details like the recoil of Mega Man’s X Buster are state-of-the-art, while the anime cinemas are clean and help enhance the story.

The music goes perfectly with the various stages, especially the thundering bass in the Volcano stage and the conga drums in the Jungle stage. The sound effects are almost as good, but Mega Man’s cutesy yelps are distracting.

Mega Man and Zero are simple to maneuver, and the controls hold up beautifully–even later in the game when you acquire more abilities and advanced techniques. Mega Man X4 makes a big splash on the bit platform. Playing as the blue bomber or as Zero is a thumb-busting good time, and the hidden areas and collectable items will keep you playing for hours.

The fourth Mega Man X entry takes the series to the bit arena for more blue-bomber blasting action. Taking a decidedly more serious tone than Mega Man 8 by nixing all the cutesy characters, X4 allows you to play as either the buster-blasting Mega Man X or the lightsword-toting Zero. X4 has excellent controls, which you’ll truly appreciate when you start accumulating special weapons and advanced skills.

The game looks awesome with tons of detail, screen-filling explosions, and colorful 2D sprite graphics. Originally slated for release only on the Saturn, X4 is also now coming to the PlayStation. Mega Man is back and he has brought Zero with him.

That’s right. You’re not just restricted to playing as Mega Man, you can now play as his side-kick too. New armies, new battles, new enemies, and most importantly, new bosses highlight Mega Man’s latest and greatest adventure. Mega Man is one of the longer running series on any gaming system.

He has not only battled his way through tons of enemies, but also through three generations of home gaming systems. I have not played many of the other Mega Man games in the past, so I was really excited to pop in Mega Man X4 to see what all the rumbling is about. All I can say is Mega Man X4 is challenging gameplay, period. He spent four days coming up with the initial blueprint, but was told by his supervisor to go back and try again. After tinkering with the Mega Man X3 armor parts, he noticed that attaching them in specific ways made it look like an airplane.

Ariga recounted creating the armor as an extremely difficult yet fun task. He also revealed that Zero was intended to have his own Ultimate Armor, but the development team chose to not finalize it. The game’s musical score was composed by Toshihiko Horiyama. The theme songs were also included on the Rockman Theme Song Collection, published by Suleputer in Mega Man X4 for PC.

The cover art for the Japanese Saturn version depicts Zero standing alone in a dark setting. However, after persistent talks with the company, Capcom finally convinced Sony to allow the game a release. According to a Capcom spokesperson, the reasoning behind the delay was that Mega Man X4 «had just gotten lost in Sony’s back log of games waiting for approval». The PlayStation version was released on September 25, , while the Saturn version came out in the early part of the following week.
