Setting up your backup email or security questions means you will always have access to your Xero account. Xero sends you a confirmation email to the backup email address you provided. You can avoid problems with time-based codes by switching to Xero Verify. It’s also the only app that lets you use push notifications for quick and easy authentication in Xero.
If you use your backup email to authenticate your Xero login, you should receive an email from Xero containing a verification code. If you have trouble answering your security questions to authenticate your Xero login, try entering your answers again. You might have entered the wrong answer. You can change your backup method to using a backup email instead. When you log in to Xero, you can select a box to skip the authenticate step for up to 30 days.
The Trust this device feature is only available if you log in using an authenticator app on a device such as a smartphone or desktop computer. It isn’t designed to work if you’re logging in using a backup method, as these methods should only be used if you can’t access your authenticator app.
The Trust this device feature is also linked to the specific computer and browser you were using when you selected the box. During setup, Xero generates a new QR code or setup key to enter into your authentication app. Horrible and stupid.

Skip to main content Search icon Search Xero Central. Follow these steps to change the app you use. Log in to Xero using a web browser. Under Additional Security , click Change in the Connected device section. Choose an authentication method, then follow the steps on screen to authenticate yourself. Choose an authenticator app. Follow the steps on screen to install or set up the app. Next to Backup email address , click Change.
Enter your new backup email address, then click Continue. Go to the inbox for your new backup email address and open the email from Xero. Enter the code shown in the email, then click Confirm. The backup method options are: Use a backup email address. Answer security questions. Under Additional Security , click the menu icon next to Multi-factor authentication. Click Turn off multi-factor authentication. Enter the code from your authenticator app, then click Disable. Click Finish. In your account settings screen, click Set up next to Multi-factor authentication.
Follow the steps on screen to set up MFA again. When prompted, choose the backup method you now want to use. When prompted, enter your new security questions and answers. Ensure that your security answers are five or more characters.
Open the Xero Verify app on your device. Tap Scan QR code or Enter setup key. Set up MFA for your new Xero account. Tap Add another account. For the account you want to delete, swipe towards the left of your screen. It is rediculous — you need to get over yourselves. It is just a glorified calculator and sometimes not that good. My Life is hard enough without you inventing ways to make it more time consuming.
Two things: 1. Rather than make all your customer have to search and hunt, why not just offer the specific link? What a pain in the neck! Very annoying! Is there somewhere on this website? Each user just needs their own login account and an authenticator app on their mobile device.

When do you this Xero will understand the value of this SSO and get onboard also? Xero keeps disconnecting our job management system app. As I am the Administrator for Xero, it seems I am the one who can log in every time to reconnect it. If not, please make it high priority. Hi Tom, thank you for your suggestion. This has been requested in the Xero community chats for some time now, would reduce risk more than just shortening the time for MFA. Just my 2 cents but the belly aching about MFA is ridiculous, people need to understand the sheer risk of cyber attack is massive. MFA is a proven mitigation technique to cyber attack and shortened device trust times while inconvenient will help to strengthen the security further.
While Xero could certainly make things more seamless for their customers by implementing SSO and other auto push capable apps. I made a note of the secret questions and answers including case sensitivity, the correct answers are rejected and then I am required to answer questions that I have not set an answer to.
